An enchanted river, magic mirrors, a petting zoo, a theater, museum, bears! This is truly the kingdom of kids, and an amazing place for anyone of any age.
Situated in the northern part of the Bois du Boulogne, the Jardin d’Acclimatation is one of Paris’ most entertaining spots, and the perfect place to go to for family fun or a different day out with friends. It boasts an interesting, if not completely outrageous, history. Opened in 1860 by Napoleon III, this amusement park began as a Paris Zoo. That is until 1870, where many of the animals were cooked and served by famous chef Alexandre Étienne Choron in Voisin, one of Paris’ finest restaurants!
A few years later, up until 1912, the park became an Anthropologic exhibition, a place to “display” humans from different indigenous cultures, as if it were a “human zoo”. Sadly, this enormously boosted the Jardin d’Acclimatation popularity, pushing the number of visitors into the million mark.
Luckily, today, there are no captives to see at the Jardin d’Acclimatation. Only tea to be had at the Maison of Mademoiselle Li, a parlour in true Pekinese style, and long walks in the Seoul Gardens. The golf course is amazing fun, and the children’s art museum is the perfect place to get the little ones started on a bit of culture!
The Jardin d’Acclimatation can be reached by a narrow-gauge colorful train that travels throughout the amusement park. You can rent boat rides on the river, take pony rides, have waffle snacks at any of the stands, or even take a painting class. The Jardin includes a miniature roadway where little ones learn about traffic safety, driving small cars and following orders from real policemen. The options are endless – you’ll have trouble deciding on what to do first!
