The Louvre, through its countless architectural phases, has dominated central Paris since no less than the late 12th century.  For those experiencing the pleasure of visiting this legendary museum for the first time, there should be no disappointment after all the hype.

Besides being one of the world’s largest and most visited museums, The Louvre is also a historic monument in and of itself. Located on the right bank of the Seine in Paris’ 1st arrondissement and sprawled across over 60,600 square meters (652,300 square feet), The Louvre contains nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 19th century. From fortress to royal household to home of the National Art and Sculpture Academy, the Palais Louvre – or Louvre Palace – officially became a museum during the French Revolution, when the National Assembly decreed it so.

The collection has grown to the point where, two years ago, it was divided into eight curatorial departments such as Islamic art, Egyptian Antiquities, Sculpture and Paintings, among others. Yet, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa continues to be The Louvre’s most prized and visited display, attracting thousands of tourists to the museum’s High Renaissance collection.

This is a place to visit with much time, as the entire collection is impossible to see and enjoy in one day – or even two. The well-known glass pyramid that sits on The Louvre’s courtyard is just as spectacular during the day as it is at night, and the outside space serves perfectly for just sitting and enjoying the view of the museum itself.

They say The Louvre is one of the places to see in one’s lifetime, and upon experiencing it, one could surely understand why.
