The Musèe National de la Marine or National Naval Museum is one of France’s great prides. It was created in 1748 after Monceau, then General Inspector of the French Navy, presented his collection of model ships and naval machinery to King Louis XV. After having been on display for years in the Naval room at the Louvre for naval engineering and architecture students, these objects now form the core of the French maritime museum.
Along with the Central Naval Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, the National Navy Museum is the oldest maritime museum in the world. Since 1943 it has been located in the Palais de Chaillot, right across the Eiffel Tower, and with over 40,000 objects under its care.
The museum has annexes and displays at other important French maritime sites such as Rochefort, St. Tropez, Toulon, Brest and Port-Lois.
This Naval homage is a must-see for any sea-loving traveler, and greatly interesting to the merely curious. Few countries have such a rich naval history as France, and the National Navy Museum’s collection of objects do it perfect justice.
